Uvac Special Nature Reserve

Uvac Special Nature Reserve – Sjenica, Srbija
The "Uvac" Special Nature Reserve is among the greatest natural treasures of Serbia. Located in the southwestern part of the country, it spans over 7,500 hectares between the mountain massifs of Zlatar, Murtenica, Čemernica, Javor and Jadovnik. The reserve rises from 760 to 1,322 meters altitude and is known as a natural air spa. At its core is the impressive canyon valley of the Uvac River, surrounded by steep limestone cliffs. The Uvac River itself, the longest tributary of the Lim, extends approximately 120 kilometers.

The most famous symbol is the spectacular meandering canyons - a natural phenomenon that has become the reserve's trademark and a visiting card of Serbia's natural beauty. The area is rich in typical karst formations: sinkholes, dry valleys, stalactites, and numerous cave systems.

The reserve is famous for birds - about 130 species are recorded, with the Griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) being most prominent. The vulture colony here is the largest in the Balkans and one of Europe's largest, protected by law since 1994.
